Exotic Pet Medicine and Surgery

We offer exotics wellness exams (which includes  nutrition and husbandry consultations/recommendations).  We also offer grooming services birds, small mammals and reptiles including: nail trims, beak trims, feather/(wing) trims.  

We see birds (parrots (psittacines), canaries, finches (Passeriformes),  pigeons, doves (Columbidae), backyard chickens (Gallus gallus) , reptiles (lizards, nonvenomous snakes, tortoises, turtles), small mammals (including rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas,ferrets,  rats, hamsters, mice)  

Exotic animals common present to veterinary hospitals on a emergency or urgent care basis.  Both acute and chronic diseases may manifest with a sudden onset of symptoms due to the tendency of exotic species to hide their illness until they can no longer hide it or is becomes advanced.

Common signs of illness to look for in exotic species:
 A pet should be brought in for immediate medical attention:
  • Severe lethargy (or tiredness), sitting on the bottom of the enclosure and fluffed up  
  • Difficult, rapid, labored breathing  
  • Any animal laying on its side or unable to stand 
  • Seizure 
  • Severe trauma (bite wounds, etc) even if the animal appears to be ok 
  • Uncontrolled bleeding 
  • Fractures with open wounds or protruding bone 
  • Not eating for 24+ hours 
  • Painful postures, hunched over, possible rigid and grinding teeth  
  • Genital bleeding, signs of genital prolapse  
  • Very small or young bird or mammal not eating 12+ hours
A pet should  be brought in today:
  • Vomiting/regurgitation/diarrhea, or loose droppings  
  • Birds not acting quite right  
  • Diminished stool production over the past 24 hours or longer 
  • Any open wounds 
  • Eye injuries 
A pet can be brought in within 12-24 hours:
  • Sneezing, congestion, nasal/eye discharge, ear infections, masses
A pet can be brought in within 24-48 hours or can be seen within the next few days:
  • Reptiles that are inappetent or constipated 
  • Reptiles that are poorly shedding their skin  
  • Mild skin problems  
  • Annual wellness exams with no other concerns
